So what’s the deal with the moon and why should you pay attention to it?
The moon, like the planet, like we as women, goes through seasons/phases. By starting to pay attention to the moon and the phases it is in, we can also start to tune into our own lives. We can start to be more present, to get out off our phones and align back to something more than ourselves.
The Basics
- The average menstrual cycle for a women who has a period is 28 days (btw totally normal if yours is shorter or longer)
- Every lunar/moon cycle, where the moon is in relation to the sun, is also 28 days
- Each menstrual cycle has 4 phases
- The moon cycle is also made up of 4 phases
So what does it all mean. It could be nothing but for me, what it symbolizes is the opportunity to see the moon as a reflection of our own cycle that we go through every month. Or to connect to a cycle if we are post menopausal. Following the sun, starts and moon is nothing new. Its what people did for a very long time and it is something that you can do now if you feel called to do it.
How to incorporate the Lunar/Moon phases
- Start simply, by noting when the Full Moon & New Moon is happening. Or if that’s to much pick one just one (new or full)
- Set a calendar reminder in your phone for the day it is happening. You can either look it up online or if you have a calendar it might already note it.
- On the day of the full or new moon take a few minutes to be present. Maybe go outside for 5 minutes or just look out the window. Simply starting to notice the moon and how it moves through its phases is a huge step.
- If you want to do something more, see some additional ideas below
- Thank the moon for being up in the sky and if its a full moon, for shining a light in the darkness.
- -Another option, which I always for, is to journal.
- New Moon – because it is the beginning of the lunar cycle try journaling about what you want to achieve or feel for the new cycle (28 days). Use it as a time to set new intentions or recommit to ones you already have since the moon is also “starting anew”
- Full Moon – since this is the peak, before the moon starts to get smaller again a lot of people like to release or let go of things during this time. Another option is to check in on the intentions you set at the new moon and make adjustments, if needed.
Whatever you decide to do during that time, doesn’t matter as much as just stopping and being present. Of noticing that you go through cycles, that like the moon, you change every day and that is okay. We aren’t meant to stay the same and if the moon can go through phases so can you. You don’t have to wait until the new year (another example of a phase that is driven by the sun) to start new. You can do it every 28 days like the moon, if you want.
NOTE: On the new moon you won’t actually see anything in the sky (yes I know its odd they call it a new moon when there is actually NO moon)
